New Clan History Book to be Published
The Council of the Clan MacLaren Society is delighted to announce the publication in April 2012 of Creag An Tuirc by Neil McLaurin, an important new insight into our Clan history.
Published in time to commemorate the Society's 50th Anniversary in the UK, this book compliments existing Clan history with particular emphasis on the MacLaren and MacLaurin families living in Scotland from the seventeenth century onwards, including the turbulent time immediately before and after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. It is at this time that many families left for a new life in the Americas or Australia. The book traces many of the clan family lines and has brief biographies on McLaren farmers, blacksmiths and weavers as well as the better known McLaren/McLaurin professionals and ministers of religion.
The author, Neil McLaurin, is a member of the Clan Council and has been so for six years. Neil's family emigrated to Australia in 1837, settled there and became prominent farmers. Neil was born in Australia but now lives in the UK. He started to research his own ancestors and then expand his work to include the social history of the whole clan. In this task he has been helped with information from clansmen and clanswomen from around the world.
This book replaces and extensively updates the compact disc that was issued in time for "The Gathering" of the clans in Edinburgh in 2009. Neil is an amateur historian and has taken over ten years to research and write this book.
Copies of this important First Edition will be available worldwide on publication for £20.00 stirling each plus postage. The Council believes that many members might wish to be involved with this publication and plan to include a special SPONSORSHIP section at the beginning of the book which will list participating members' names in alphabetical order along with his or her country of residence. The list will be limited to one hundred names worldwide and will be included in each copy of the first edition.
Each participating member will receive a copy signed by the author immediately on publication and the cost of sponsorship at £75.00 stirling includes postage and packing. This offer can only be open to members until 31st January 2012 at which time the book will be sent to the printers.
Donations towards the publication costs will also be most gratefully received. For further details please contact the Secretary, Nicholas Law, at n.s.law@intbiogcentre.com
